A court in Mumbai on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to Binoy Kodiyeri, son of CPI(M) leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, in connection with a rape case.

Binoy had sought anticipatory bail in the case at the Dindoshi district court in Mumbai on June 27. According to news agency ANI, Binoy was directed by the court to submit a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and present himself before police every Monday, for a month. Binoy has also been asked to appear for a medical examination when required by investigators.

The Mumbai Police filed charges of rape and cheating against Binoy following a complaint by a woman. The complainant claimed she had met Binoy in Dubai in 2009 when she was working as a bar dancer. The woman claimed Binoy showered her with expensive gifts and posed as a builder from Kerala. She had a relationship with him and they had a son in 2010. The woman claims Binoy cut ties with her in 2015. The woman sent Binoy, who is already married, a legal notice in December.

The Mumbai Police had reached Kerala to search for Binoy in late June. Binoy allegedly remained incommunicado during the time. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who was formerly home minister of Kerala and is now secretary of the Kerala unit of the CPI(M), had put up a brave face over the case against his son. He had declared neither he nor the CPI(M) would act to protect Binoy if he were guilty.

This is not the first time Binoy Kodiyeri has got into trouble with the law. Last year, Binoy’s name figured in a dispute with an Arab businessman who complained against him.
