Former Kerala legislator A.P. Abdullakutty, who was expelled from the Congress for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this month, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at a function in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Abdullakutty received the primary membership from BJP working president J.P. Nadda at the function which was also attended by Union minister of state V. Muraleedharan and Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
The former Kannur MP said he had become a 'national Muslim' by joining the BJP and that his objective was to bridge the gap between the BJP and the Muslims.

Abdullakutty had earlier met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.
In a Facebook post on May 28, Abdullakutty had noted that the credit of the victory the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections went to Modi's development agenda. The post didn't go down well with the Congress party, and its state chief Mullappally Ramachandran issued a notice to him. He was later expelled from the party.
Talking to the Times of India recently, Abdullakutty had claimed that Modi's ideology was based on “extreme development”. “My politics is the politics of development which I see in the Modi regime, as his ideology is based on extreme development and not extreme Hinduism,” he had said.
Before joining the Congress, Abdullakutty was an ex-MP of the CPI(M) which expelled him in 2009 for praising Modi who was then the Gujarat chief minister.
