Kamal Nath reiterates farm loan waiver promise; BJP calls it ‘eyewash’

The MP CM writes an open letter to farmers to assure them of the waiver

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday reiterated his government’s promise of farm loan waiver as the state government came out with huge advertisements in local newspapers saying that the next phase of waiver would come soon and that the farmers shouldn’t fall for any rumours in this regard.

The move comes three days after BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya held a tractor rally in Indore to highlight the ‘unfulfilled promise’ of the Congress government on farmers’ loan waiver.

“I have come to know that some people are spreading different kind of rumours. Do not fall prey to these rumours. I assure that we would fulfill our promise of farm loan waiver,” Kamal Nath said in the advertisement, issued in the form of an open letter with his signature.

The BJP, however, dismissed the advertisement as an ‘eyewash’ and said the Congress government had failed to keep its biggest pre-poll promise.

Chief spokesperson of BJP, Deepak Vijayvargiya, said that it has now been almost six months that the Congress government has been in power, but it squarely failed to fulfill its promise of farm loan waiver ‘for all farmers up to Rs 2 lakh.’

“Now they are restoring to such tactics as eyewash. They have no intent or means to fulfill the promises. We have already started an agitation in this regard and it will continue on the streets of Madhya Pradesh,” he said.

The chief minister's letter claims that farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh of about 20 lakh farmers have already been waived in the first phase despite his government inheriting empty coffers when it came to power.  The process for second phase waiver has been started for those farmers with loan up to Rs 1 lakh and with functional loan accounts, except those with multiple loan accounts.

During the process, the letter said, it was noticed that some farmers were having multiple loan accounts from banks and cooperative societies and in some cases loan has been obtained from more than five banks. “Naturally, a separate process would have to be undertaken for waiver for such farmers,” it said.

Later, Agriculture Minister Sachin Yadav tweeted the open letter by the chief minister and promised the farmers that the loan waiver would be done.
