The turf war between the Centre and the West Bengal government continued unabated on Tuesday with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launching a fresh attack on the Narendra Modi-led dispensation, accusing it of conspiring to tarnish the image of her state. Her scathing remarks came a day after West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi met the prime minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apprise them on the law and order situation in the state.

On Sunday, the MHA had issued a stern warning to the state government urging it to take measures to maintain law and order in the wake of continued post-poll violence.

Violence has been reported from various places of West Bengal after the BJP secured 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, just four less than that of the TMC.

However, speaking at an event to mark the unveiling of a bust of social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar at the Hare school ground on Tuesday, Banerjee alleged that there was plan being hatched to turn West Bengal into Gujarat. Last month, a statue of Vidyasagar was vandalised in the same place during a roadshow of then BJP president Shah in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections.

“I respect the governor. But every post has its constitutional limit. Bengal is being defamed. If you want to save Bengal and its culture, come together. There is a plan being hatched to turn Bengal into Gujarat,” she said.

"I am ready to go to jail but will not allow it to happen," she said.

After unveiling the bust, Banerjee accused the BJP of bringing a culture of violence into the state and said among the 10 people killed in post-poll violence in the state, eight were from her party.

“Kill me if needed. I don't need anything. I work for the people. A lot of people are killed and children die in UP, but it does not come out anywhere in the media as it is all controlled by them,” the chief minister said.
