Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who lost with a huge margin to BJP’s Pragya Thakur from Bhopal in the Lok Sabha polls, said he was worried that the ideology of the killers of Mahatma Gandhi had won.

Singh was referring to Thakur’s controversial statement before the polls, when she said Nathuram Godse (Mahatma Gandhi’s killer) was, is, and would be, a patriot. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Singh, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, said Gandhi’s ideology of truth and non-violence were core principles of the Congress and that the party would continue to tread the path. He added that he was worried that the ideology of Mahatma’s killers had won and that of Gandhi, the messenger of peace, had lost.

Singh lost the Bhopal seat to Pragya Thakur by a margin of 3.64 lakh votes, the result being announced officially on Thursday night. Speaking before a section of media, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said that the Congress hardly knew what Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology was, instead always using him to secure votes. “It is actually the Congress that killed the philosophy of Gandhi. Narendra Modi is actually fulfilling them through various schemes, including the Swachh Bharat,” Vijayvargiya said.

Singh, though refusing to comment on EVMs, said it was surprising that the BJP always seemed to be in possession of a magic stick, always achieving pre-announced targets like 280-plus in 2014 and 300-plus this time.

Singh also extended his congratulations to PM Narendra Modi and all winning members of the Parliament. He also said that the BJP was trying to lure Congress MLAs in Madhya Pradesh. “But, we are totally confident of our MLAs and those supporting us,” Singh said.

Earlier in the day, the newly elected Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur reached the state BJP headquarters in Bhopal. She said she does not want to engage in any negative conversation. “I am yours, and you all are mine, and together we will work for progress of Bhopal,” she said.
