Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday declared he “could never forgive” BJP Lok Sabha candidate Pragya Singh Thakur for her praise of Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

Modi made the remarks in an interview with TV channel News 24. Modi claimed Pragya “had insulted Bapu” by her comments in favour of Godse.

Earlier on Friday, BJP chief Amit Shah had announced the views expressed in praise of Godse by Pragya and two other BJP MPs—Nalinkumar Kateel and Anantkumar Hegde—were their personal opinions. Shah also added the trio had been asked by the party to explain their statements.

Pragya's statement, calling Godse a patriot, was made on the sidelines of election campaigning in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday. The remarks led to outrage by opposition parties, with the Congress demanding a response from Modi. Pragya apologised for her statement early on Friday morning in a tweet.
