Supreme Court stays execution of teacher who raped minor girl

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the execution of Mahendra Singh Gond, a school teacher who was sentenced to death for raping a minor.

The teacher was awarded the death sentence by a district court for raping a four-year-old girl at Satna in Madhya Pradesh on September 19. The Madhya Pradesh High Court upheld the sentence and rejected Gond's appeal on January 25.

The execution was fixed for March 2. The death warrant was sent to the Central Jail in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Gond was arrested in Parsamnia of Uchehra police station area after the the minor was found on July 1, 2018. The attack was so severe that the child needed surgery to realign her instestines.

According to reports, Gond had abducted the child on the night of June 30. He raped the child and left her for dead in the jungle where her family found her in the early hours in the morning.

The then collector Mukesh Shukla arranged for the victim to be airlifted and admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment. She spent months in recovery and even gave a statement via video chat at the trial.
