Tremors in Chennai as earthquake strikes Bay of Bengal

Mild tremors shook Chennai on Tuesday morning as an earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal. The earthquake measured 4.9 meters on the Richter scale. According to USGS data, the epicentre was 10km below sea level and the quake struck at around 1.30am.

Though the quake was 609km away from Chennai, the light tremors woke people in the city. They soon took to social media to report the quake.

Earthquakes have been reported in the past from areas around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
