Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a blistering attack on the Kerala government and the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) over the Sabarimala issue, saying the cultural ethos of the state was under attack.

Speaking at a rally of Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in Thrissur, Modi said the people of India have seen how the communist government is trying to disrespect the culture of Kerala.

"Sabarimala got the attention of the entire nation. The people of India have seen how the communist government was trying to disrespect the culture of Kerala,” Modi said.

“Why is the government undermining the culture of the state? Unfortunately, the cultural ethos of Kerala is under attack. It's been done by a party which is governing the state," the prime minister said addressing a huge gathering.

Accusing both the Congress and the communists of questioning India's democratic heritage on foreign lands, Modi said both these parties do not have any respect to the constitutional institutions.

He also lashed out at the Congress, saying the party talking about democracy is the biggest joke.

This is the second time Modi has taken on the Kerala government over the temple issue in less than a month. On January 15, while addressing a gathering of BJP workers in Kollam, Modi had said the conduct of Kerala government on the Sabarimala issue would go down in the history as one of the "most shameful behaviours by any party and government".

The Supreme Court on September 28 had lifted the ban on women aged between 10 and 50 in the hill shrine, sparking off widespread protests in the state. Even as the top court agreed to hear a batch of review petitions filed against its verdict, the Kerala government has maintained that it was constitutionally bound to implement the verdict.
