The civil society in Mizoram on Friday demanded the reinstatement of state home secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chuaungo was transferred by the previous Chief Electoral Officer S.B. Sashank.

The coordination commitee, which spearheaded a massive movement for Shashank's removal, said they have also demanded that the PM bring back Chuaungo immediately so that he can be promoted and be made chief secretary of the state after the election.

Chuaungo was removed by Shashank after the latter registered a report with the election commissioners that the officer was "interfering with the election process in the state".

Pu Vanlalruata, general secretary of the coordination committee and president of the powerful Young Mizo Association (YMA), admitted that he had moved such a prayer to prime minister to bring back the officer.

"Chuaungo is an honest officer and he should not be punished. We would like to see him as chief secretary after the new government takes charge post election result," Vanlalruata told THE WEEK.

Asked about the reaction of the prime minister, he said, "Prime Minister told us he knew the officer as he had worked in Gujarat when Modi was chief minister there. He assured us to look into the mater."

The coordination committee spearheaded the movement against Shashank ahead of the election due to which the election commission had to remove the CEO from his post.

The civil society also demanded that the pact between Bru community and Union home ministry should also be sent to them.

"It needs to be done so that we know the actual number of Bru tribes living in Tripura. We would like to know the real Bru tribes who could be repatriated in Mizoram. There are good number of Bru people living in Mizoram and Mizos are not disturbing them," he said.

The prime minister on November 23 visited Mizoram and addressed a rally at Lunglei in Mizoram. He later held a closed door meeting with the powerful civil societies at Aizawl. Rumour also spread that PMO, which organised the meeting, also invited church bodies which refused to attend.

But Church body has refuted the charge. "We have not got any invitation from the prime minister's office or anybody. So there was no question on our part in attend the meeting," said Rev K. Lalringthanga, general secretary of the Baptist church of Mizoram.
