Relatives of Commander Abhilash Tomy requested the authorities to provide him urgent medical support. Commander Tomy was rescued by the French vessel Osiris and has been admitted to a hospital in the remote Amsterdam Island.

An Australian ship with helicopter is expected to reach Amsterdam Island by September 27. The relatives asked the authorities to airlift Tomy and shift him to a hospital in Australia so as to get him under expert medical care as early as possible.

The Indian ship would take longer to reach Amsterdam Island and shifting Tomy to Mauritius in the Indian ship may take even longer. Tomy's relatives pleaded not to delay his medical assistance that longer and treat him in Australian.

The 39-year-old Indian Navy yachtsman, Commander Tomy, was injured during the 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of race. The officer had been stranded in the Indian Ocean near Australia since Friday after a deadly storm hit his boat.

Tomy's vessel was dismasted in extremely rough weather and sea conditions, with wind speeds of 130 kmph. He was in third position in the race and has sailed over 10,500 nautical miles in the last 84 days, since the race started on July 1.
