A day after several Congress workers were beaten by police during a protest at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, party president Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the state as well as central governments.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Rahul said dictatorship has become a profession under Narendra Modi regime and that the "attack" would be remembered as an act of "political persecution".

"Under Narendra Modi's regime, dictatorship has become a profession. The cowardly manner in which the fundamental rights of Congress workers in Bilaspur were attacked by the Raman Singh government will be remembered by the people there as political persecution," the 48-year-old leader said in a tweet in Hindi.

He also shared a video of the incident.

At least seven Congress workers were injured on Tuesday when police beat them with sticks in the city after they allegedly threw garbage inside Urban Administration Minister Amar Agrawal's house.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Neeraj Chandrakar claimed the Congress workers also roughed up a policewoman and some male constables, following which a case was registered against them.

The opposition party, however, claimed that its workers were carrying out a peaceful protest against Agrawal, but were brutally beaten up by police.
