DMK on Thursday suspended one of its activists after a CCTV footage showing him brutally attacking a woman inside a beauty parlour went viral on WhatsApp and other social platforms.  S. Selvakumar, former Perambalur district functionary, was suspended from from basic membership and all party posts “due to actions that go beyond the code of conduct of the party,” DMK said in a press release.

The incident was reportedly taken place in May at Mayuri Beauty Parlour in Perambalur. However, police said the woman filed the complaint only recently.

The video shows Selvakumar talking to a woman inside a parlour while two other women looking on. A few seconds later, he is seen repeatedly kicking the woman while other two women trying to restrain him. He later puts his hand around her neck and pushes her onto floor, and continues to kick her.

According to police, the woman, who owns the parlour, allegedly had financial dealings with Selvakumar. On the day of the incident, Selvakumar came to the parlour and started an altercation with the woman. As things heated up, he brutally kicked and assaulted the woman.

A report in The News Minute on Thursday quoted a police officer as saying, “We saw the video only yesterday and based on the woman’s complaint, we have arrested Selvakumar and will remand him today. The intention behind releasing the video is not yet known and we are questioning the woman regarding that.”
