With rains unleashing their fury, apart from deaths and damage to property, many people have lost important documents. Valuable documents like land deeds, bank documents, ID cards and ration card have been damaged or are missing. Though people are in a quandary over the development, there are ways to get back the papers.

Ration card
People who have lost their ration card should submit an application to the respective taluk supply office for a temporary card. If they possess a copy of the old card, things will be easier. After obtaining the temporary card, they can apply for a permanent one.

Land deed
If the title deed for land is lost, a certied copy can be taken from the sub registrar office. Procedures will be quicker if the number of the deed and the date of registration are known. In some sub registrar ofces, all land deeds since January 1, 1992 are available in digital form. Older deeds can be traced by searching with the first letter of the title holder, village, ward and area. An advertisement in newspapers can be issued regarding the loss of the document to ensure that no misuse takes place.

Voter’s ID
Procedures to obtain a new voter’s ID are available on the chief election commissioner’s website www.ceo.kerala.gov.in The form can be downloaded, filled up and submitted to the electoral officer or tahasildar along with a copy of the lost card and a fees of Rs 25. If the copy is not available, the number of the old card is available from the website.

Aadhaar card
Approach the nearest Akshaya Kendra where Aadhaar enrolment is done. With the name, address and date of birth of the applicant, the Aadhaar number can be traced. By biometric reading of fingerprints, e-Aadhaar will be issued. A print can be taken for subsequent use.

Text books
If the rains have damaged the text books of school students, they should approach the office of the deputy director of education along with a certicate from the head master. They will be issued new text books.

RC book, driving license
Approach the regional transport office with the damaged RC book or driving license. A new document can be claimed. However, if a vehicle loan has been availed, a no objection certicate from the respective nancial institution should also be produced. In case the RC book or license is lost, an advertisement should be given in newspapers regarding the matter. The application for new documents should subsequently be submitted. Duplicates will be provided within 14 days.
