DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi, who was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai for a tracheostomy procedure on Wednesday, got back home later in the afternoon. The 94-year-old leader went back home after the Trachea tube was replaced. The tube requires to be replaced every six months.

The DMK leader is away from active politics for quite sometime and stays within the four walls of his Gopalapuram residence. He was earlier hospitalised in November 2016 for allergy related ailments. In December 2016, he underwent tracheostomy to enable breathing through the windpipe. He also suffers from lung disease and undergoes treatment once in every six months.

Off late, most of the family members and many senior political leaders have been calling on Karunanidhi at his house. The DMK chief, according to sources, has also been undergoing speech therapy.

Speaking at the Manorama News Conclave in Kochi recently, DMK women's wing leader and Rajya sabha MP M. Kanimozhi said, “Karunanidhi is keeping well. But he is not able to talk because of the tracheostomy.”
