Muslim cleric thrashed in Ranchi for refusing to chant 'Jai Sri Ram'

A young Muslim cleric was allegedly attacked by a gang of unidentified people in Ranchi while returning home after evening prayers, reports said.

The incident reportedly took place on June 10 when Maulana Azharul Islam and his brother Maulana Imran were on their way back home from a nearby mosque in Naya Sarai village. The group allegedly intercepted them and asked them to chant 'Jai Sri Ram'. 

According to reports, Maulana Imran managed to flee but Maulana Mazharul Islam was brutally assaulted by the mob after he refused to obey their demand. He has been hospitalised.

On Wednesday, while talking to news agency ANI, the duo's father requested people to maintain peace and not take law into their hands.

"While returning home from evening prayers some people attacked him. He was asked to chant 'Jai Shri Ram'.He has been hospitalised. I request everyone to maintain peace and not take law in hands," he said.
