Naxals shot dead two villagers at a marketplace in Sukhtara village in Rajnandgaon, the Assembly constituency of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, accusing them of being "police informers." Guman Singh,35 and Ashok Gond, 36, were kidnapped by a specialist action team of Maoists from Sukhtara and brought to the marketplace before they were shot dead in front of the villagers on Tuesday night.

According to media reports, the Maoists told the villagers that the two were killed because they were “police informers.”

The two murders took place around 7pm. Police launched a search operation immediately after the incident. The matter has gained more seriousness as it happened in the Assembly constituency of the chief minister.

Though Rajnandgaon is a Naxal-affected district, the ultras have never been very active here. The incident has put the government on high alert.

The Naxals later threw around pamphlets in the village, warning the government of revenge against the killing of 40 Naxals in neighbouring Gadchiroli district. About two weeks ago, security forces had killed nearly 40 Maoist guerillas in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli jungle. Rajnandgaon and Gadchiroli share common state borders.

Maoists in the region have been quite upset with the massive offensive of the security forces, which killed 40 of their men. After the Gadchiroli incident, Naxals have put up banners and posters all over the region warning of revenge.

Two days back, the Maoists had burnt two JCB machines that were used for digging a drinking water pond in south Bastar's Dantewada region.
