The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Friday wrote a letter to Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor, seeking permission to conduct 'shakhas' on the campus.

The letter was purportedly written to dispel misconceptions about the rightwing outfit among students of the minority community.

A RSS worker, Mohammed Amir Rashid, in the letter, stated "A wrong perception is being created that RSS is anti-Muslim; they are actually a nationalist organisation. If 'shakhas' are held, students will know what RSS is about."

Rashid further noted that the RSS is dedicated to the nation's service and works without religious discrimination.

According to media reports, the Aligarh Muslim University Students Union president opposed the move.

The students union at Aligarh Muslim University had hit the headlines in late February when one of its faction opposed the visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to the university for its convocation. The students demanded that Kovind apologise for controversial remarks he made in 2010, in which he referred to Christianity and Islam as being faiths that were 'alien' to India.
