Two days after the Central Crime Branch of Tamil Nadu police registered an FIR against senior state BJP leader S.Ve. Shekher under various sections related to harassment of women, Shekher on Monday approached the Madras High Court for anticipatory bail.

Shekher came in the eye of a storm for sharing a Facebook post on Friday, which made sexist and offensive comments about women journalists.

An association of journalists filed a police complaint demanding action against Shekher. The BJP leader claimed he had inadvertently shared the post (which he deleted) without reading its content and issued an apology on Saturday.

Shekher's post was related to the outrage triggered by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit patting the cheek of a journalist of THE WEEK after a press conference last week.

Purohit's act also led to criticism of the BJP, as Purohit was a member of the party and was appointed by the Narendra Modi government. Purohit issued an official apology to the journalist.
