In the second wave of the deadly coronavirus, the deluge of infections has led to severe health crisis hitting us like a storm. Covid has infected over 3.86 lakh more people in India in yet another worrying daily high and killed 3,498 in the last 24 hours. With a total number of 18.4 million total confirmed cases as on April 30th, 2021 and a total of 2.05 lakh deaths India is sailing through real tough times.

In a large study, severe illness was seen in 15.7% of COVID-19 patients following hospitalization. ARDS leading to respiratory failure is the major cause of death in 70% of fatal COVID-19 cases.

Cytokine storm and symptoms of sepsis are the cause of death in 28% of fatal COVID-19 cases. Critically ill patients mostly go through a sepsis-like condition, cytokine release syndrome and multiple organ failure. Along with the pharmacological approaches, new extracorporeal organ support therapies including hemadsorption and hemoperfusion may be a promising and important therapeutic option to help manage the serious complications in critically-ill COVID-19 infected patients and may aid in rescuing critically ill patients from a deleterious cytokine storm.

There are devices which are indicated in hypercytokinemia and used as adjunct therapies. One such hemadsorption device has received approval for patients 18 years of age or older with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to the ICU is CytoSorb.
