Suriya's Tamil film 'Soorarai Pottru' enters Oscar race

The film has entered the race in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director categories

Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, starring Suriya and Aparna Balamurali, has joined the Oscar race. The Sudha Kongara-directorial has entered the race under the General Category for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Score and other categories.

On Republic Day, the film's co-producer Rajsekar Pandian took to Twitter to announce the big news. He wrote: "Happy Republic Day! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS under General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories! The film has been made available in the Academy Screening Room today."

According to reports, the film will also be screened at the 2021 Golden Globes Awards for the Best Foreign Film category.

Soorarai Pottru is based on the life of Captain Gopinath, who founded budget airline Air Deccan. Suriya's Soorarai Pottru became the first Tamil film to release on an OTT platform after the pandemic-induced lockdown and subsequent closing of theatres.
