Actress Parvathy Thiruvoth has written to the Centre, stating her objections to the draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification, 2020, according to reports.

Parvathy urged the government to immediately withdraw the notification, in a letter addressed to the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in New Delhi.

Her letter comes after the draft notification was published in March, with the Union environment ministry inviting suggestions and responses from the public till August 11.

“To ensure we have a proper law, which guarantees fair industrialisation, infrastructure development and progress, we must develop a substantive EIA law that is within the bounds of India’s Environmental laws and particularly the Constitution of India. From all accounts, the proposed Notification fails this critical test,” Parvathy said, The NewsMinute reported.

The actress also pointed out that that the draft was released only in English and Hindi. “Yet, when you issue this notification for public comments, and in languages that most Indians do not speak or understand, and that during the pandemic when almost all communication channels are unavailable - a time when we are most worried about our survival and of our near and dear ones (horrible times you will agree), it makes me ask: is the Ministry of Environment and Forests not concerned about the welfare of all the people of India?” Parvathy stated..

The Delhi High Court asked the Centre on Tuesday to reply to a plea seeking contempt action against it for alleged "wilful disobedience" of a judicial order to ensure the draft Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification of 2020 is published in all the 22 languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution within 10 days from June 30.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva issued the notice to the Environment Ministry, which was directed by the high court on June 30 to ensure the draft EIA 2020 is published in all 22 Indian languages within 10 days, and sought its response to the contempt plea by August 17.
