Twitter pulls down Rajinikanth’s janta curfew post for ‘violating rules’

He said the curfew is required to prevent stage 3 community transmission

Actor Rajinikanth’s post backing PM Modi’s Janta curfew has been taken down by Twitter, according to reports. The actor-politician, had on Saturday, tweeted that the virus was in its second stage in India and appealed people to abide by the curfew call and stay indoors

The video message in which he said this 14-hour curfew is required to break the transmission chain of the novel coronavirus was taken down by Twitter, after complaints of it being misinformation. He had said that this step was important to prevent India from moving from stage 2 to stage 3 of the disease. The Italian government had announced a similar curfew but people did not follow it, because of which many thousand lives were lost. India could not afford to go through that, he had said.

Though Twitter has taken down the post, the video message of the actor is still available on YouTube. In place of the previous tweet, a message reads: “This Tweet is no longer available because it violated the Twitter Rules.”

After Modi called for janta curfew, several celebrities took to social media to support the initiative and urged people to join in. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan had also supported the janta curfew.

Requesting people to stay indoors, he and said that extraordinary situation requires extraordinary measures. After Modi addressed the nation on Thursday, his speech was hailed by Bollywood celebrities including Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, Ayushmann Khurrana, Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty and Varun Dhawan.

In a video posted on Instagram, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan appealed for people to be careful for the next 10-15 days and avoid public spaces. “To fight this crisis the government and the citizens have to put up a strong joint fight. So I appeal again, please do not panic, he said. 

Novel coronavirus cases in India rose to 341 on Sunday after fresh cases were reported from various parts of the country, the Union Health Ministry said.

The total includes 41 foreign nationals and four deaths reported from Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Maharashtra so far.
