Thanks to Jayalalithaa biopic, Kangana now India's highest paid actress: Reports

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut is on her way to becoming India's highest paid actress. According to reports, Kangana will be paid Rs 24 crore for portraying former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa in a biopic. The bilingual projected directed by A.L. Vijay, will be titled Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi.

Deepika Padukone was believed to be the highest paid actress in the country. For Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, Padukone was reportedly paid Rs 13 crore. In fact, she was paid more than the male leads of the film—Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

Kangana had announced on her birthday last week that she will essaying Jayalalithaa. The film will be written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad of Baahubali and Manikarnika fame.

In an official statement, Kangana said: “Jayalalithaaji is one of the biggest female success stories of this century. She was a superstar and went on to become an iconic politician, it’s a great concept for a mainstream film. I am honoured to be a part of this mega project.”

Director Vijay said: “Jayalalithaa madam was one of the most prominent leaders of our country. Making a film on her life is a big responsibility and we are going to do it with utmost care and honesty. Am proud and happy with our association with one of India’s biggest star and the very talented Kangana Ranaut ji to portray the dynamic role of our very dynamic leader.”
