Oscars: 'Black Panther' first superhero film to enter best picture category

Superhero movie Black Panther has been nominated in the best picture category in the 91 Academy Awards. The movie will compete for the top prize with Netflix movie Roma and British historical romp The Favourite both of which have been nominated in as many as 10 categories. Other contenders for the best picture award include musical romance A Star is Born, 1960s segregation-era comedy Green Book, political satire Vice, Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman and rock musical Bohemian Rhapsody.

Black Panther, which has been nominated in seven categories, became the first superhero movie ever to win a best picture nomination. Apart from best picture category, it has also been nominated for best background score, sound editing, costume design, and production design among others.

The awards will be presented on February 24.

Roma, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, will also compete in the best foreign language film category as it is shot in Spanish and an indigenous Mexican language. It has also been nominated in best screenplay, director and a host of other categories.

The Favourite, a comedy set in the court of 18th-century British monarch Queen Anne, was nominated in best picture category, best director, actor, supporting actress, cinematography and editing among others.

A Star Is Born, a musical directed by Bradley Cooper has bagged eight nominations, including best picture, best actor and actress, best adapted screenplay and cinematography among others.
