The Indian Army's short-range precision-strike capabilities received a major boost as it took delivery of 450 Nagastra 1R loitering munitions from Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL). This is the largest single-batch supply of such weapons to the Indian Army.

The indigenously developed Nagastra 1R is designed for kamikaze-style attacks on enemy targets, giving the Army a precision-strike option that also allows missions to be aborted and the system recovered.

The Army placed the order under emergency procurement following rigorous technical evaluations and live trials. Four companies had participated in the trials, but SDAL was the only one to demonstrate all the required operational parameters.

The acquisition adds to the Army's inventory of loitering munitions at a time when such systems are assuming an increasingly important role in military operations as evidenced by Operation Sindoor.

Importance of Nagastra 1R

The Nagastra 1R was configured specifically to meet the Indian Army's requirements for short-range operations.

One of its major features is the ability to carry out kamikaze attacks while retaining the option to abort a mission and recover the munition.

The system also offers high-precision targeting, boasting a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of two metres. Its performance and target-hit accuracy were evaluated through multiple live trials before procurement.

Another advantage is its surveillance and targeting capability. Nagastra 1R is equipped with a 360-degree gimbal camera and offers the option of integrating a thermal camera for night operations. The system also incorporates proprietary encryption for video and telemetry communications, say media reports.

Besides, Nagastra 1R is designed as a cost-effective loitering munition system, featuring fully reusable launcher systems. The system, with more than 80 per cent indigenous content, reportedly offers a relatively economical precision-strike solution without compromising accuracy or quality.

Earlier this year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said Nagastra drones manufactured by the Solar Group had been successfully employed during Operation Sindoor.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Medium Caliber Ammunition Manufacturing Facility at Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited in Nagpur, Singh said the drones had accurately struck terrorist targets, demonstrating their strategic capabilities.

The dDefence minister also appreciated the development of more advanced Nagastra variants and expressed confidence that the systems would prove highly effective against adversaries if required in future operations.
