Google announces USD 800 million towards COVID-19 relief efforts

The funds will go to helping small business, health workers and research on COVID-19

Internet giant Google has announced a package of more of than USD 800 million towards the government agencies and research in the effort to combat the coronavirus. It will also contribute to financial institutions to help small and medium businesses (SMBs) during the COVID-19 crisis.

“As the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen around the world, it’s taking a devastating toll on lives and communities. To help address some of these challenges, today we’re announcing a new $800+ million commitment to support small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), health organizations and governments, and health workers on the frontline of this global pandemic,” Sundar Pichai has said.

As per reports, Google will provide USD 250 million in ad grants to help the World Health Organization (WHO) and other government agencies to prevent the spread of the pandemic. USD 200 million would go to NGOs and financial institutions to help SMBs. Google Ads credits worth USD 340 will be provided to SMBs having account that have been active in the past year. Google Cloud credits worth USD 20 million will be given to academic institutions and researchers to fight COVID-19.

The tech giant is also providing financial support and expertise to increase the production of PPEs and other lifesaving medical equipment. Collaborating with Magid Glove & Safety, Google will also facilitate the production of three million masks to be given to the Centres for Disease Control Foundation.
