Presidency University, Calcutta has produced yet another Nobel laureate after Abhijit Banerjee was awarded the prestigious award. He was awarded the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel along with Esther Duflo and Michel Kremer. 

The award was given to the trio for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.

Abhijit completed his B.Sc. in economics from Presidency University, Calcutta, in 1981. Abhijit is the second alumnus from Presidency to win the award in economics. Amartya Sen was the other.

Abhijit Banerjee married Esther Duflo in 2015 and the couple has a child. Duflo in the second woman and the youngest to win the prize in economics. 

Madras Presidency College has two Nobel laureates―C.V. Raman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. Both won their Nobel Prize in physics.
