Swedish global fashion giant H&M, which has committed Rs 700 crore towards FDI in India, is all set to open its first store in Ahmedabad on Friday. It is also H&M's first store in Gujarat and the 31st store in India.

Hours before the store, spread over 15,500 square feet in the western part of Ahmedabad, opens, H&M India's communication head Dhatri Bhatt said the Indian market is exciting and growing, and has immense potential for global fashion. Last year, H&M, which is also available online, did a business of Rs 940 crore in India.

According to Bhatt, people in India are aware about global trends. Stating that any global brand is effectively its competitor, she said that there is space for everyone in the Indian market.

According to Bhatt, H&M has pledged to make its entire range of garments, including in India, sustainable by 2030, by using either recycled or organic materials. The rates of the garments made out of recycled material would be the same as other garments, she added.

Towards the initative of being sustainable, each of its stores, including, the one in Ahmedabad, has a drop box in which customers can leave their garments, bedsheets or anything else that they do not want

to use. These are then categorised depending on the condition of the garments. While some are given away to the needy, the ones that are not in wearable condition are sent for recycling. The

customers are given discount coupons, in return.

The brand will soon open stores in Aurangabad and Mumbai. It has 4,500 stores across the world.
