The Strait of Hormuz crisis is escalating into a significant macroeconomic challenge for India, impacting growth, inflation, fiscal health, and external balances. Moody's has already downgraded India's FY27 growth forecast due to higher oil prices, weakening demand, and deteriorating external conditions, signifying a substantial loss in output and economic momentum. While retail inflation has remained contained, wholesale inflation, particularly in fuel and power, has surged dramatically, indicating future consumer price increases. The crisis is also straining India's fiscal position, with oil marketing companies facing daily losses and the government reducing excise duties on fuel, thereby weakening fiscal balances. Furthermore, disrupted fertilizer supply chains and increased global prices are poised to significantly raise India's fertilizer subsidy burden, forcing a difficult trade-off between protecting farmers and managing fiscal costs or risking food inflation and rural distress. Externally, India's substantial reliance on oil imports transiting through the Strait of Hormuz is widening its import bill, weakening the rupee, and worsening the current account deficit, with merchandise trade deficits reaching record highs. Additionally, instability in the Gulf could disrupt remittances, further stressing the external sector. The depreciating rupee exacerbates inflationary pressures by increasing the cost of imported inputs, and India has consequently slipped back to sixth place in nominal GDP rankings. While Prime Minister Modi has called for reduced expenditure, the situation may require more profound structural reforms, akin to the 1991 crisis, to enhance India's resilience to energy shocks and foster more robust, job-generating economic growth.

The recent Trump-Xi summit in China, marked by symbolic gestures like touching an ancient tree, highlighted China's ascent to superpower parity with the US, evident in its refusal to budge on the Iran issue and its strategic positioning demonstrated by hosting Russian President Putin shortly after Trump's departure. Despite Trump's hopes for a "G-2" moment and a resolution to the Iran crisis to boost his domestic standing, China reiterated its four-point plan for the Middle East, indirectly criticizing the Iran war, and offered a significantly reduced Boeing aircraft order, indicating a failure to achieve major breakthroughs. The absence of a joint statement and differing approaches to Iran's nuclear program underscored the continued competition between the two nations, with China successfully asserting its territorial integrity regarding Taiwan, leaving the US hesitant to openly challenge this red line.

The recent National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak, leading to its cancellation and triggering investigations, highlights a recurring systemic failure in India's examination culture rather than an isolated incident. Investigations into past leaks reveal sophisticated, premeditated operations involving insiders, solvers, and couriers, with perpetrators compromising the system at multiple points, often exploiting systemic weaknesses and operating across states. While the current case, now under CBI investigation, appears to be wider in scale and spread than previous ones, the pattern of denial, delay, and reluctant acceptance by authorities before investigations commence remains a troubling constant. The National Testing Agency, responsible for NEET, faces scrutiny over its security protocols, which often focus on the final stages of the examination process while neglecting earlier vulnerabilities. Proposed solutions include a shift towards computer-based testing to reduce physical handling, though this introduces new digital vulnerabilities, and educators suggest other measures like multiple question paper sets or randomized distribution to disrupt leak networks, all while the emotional and psychological toll on students due to uncertainty and eroded trust remains significant.
