Indian universities are undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond traditional academic structures to foster an environment where education seamlessly integrates with practical application and industry readiness, as exemplified by BITS Pilani's support for defense startup Apollyon Dynamics through formal coursework and alumni investment, and by Manav Rachna University's innovative e-portfolio requirement and AI-powered mental health support system, with institutions like Delhi University introducing value-addition courses and extended undergraduate programs to cultivate a technological mindset and entrepreneurial spirit, while others like JNU focus on building core competencies that empower graduates with adaptability and confidence, and BHU integrates internships and multidisciplinary courses, all reflecting a broader shift driven by private institutions and a recognition that degrees alone are insufficient without practical skills and the capability to apply knowledge in a rapidly evolving job market facing high youth unemployment.

In an interview, former UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar highlighted the National Education Policy 2020's emphasis on empowering universities with greater freedom within national guidelines to foster growth and bridge the gap between education and employment. Key developments include the redesign of education around learning outcomes, flexibility, and employability through initiatives like the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, which integrates internship credits, vocational minors, and flexible entry/exit options, and the National Credit Framework that synchronizes academic, vocational, and experiential learning into a learner-centered model. Industry partnerships are being deepened through the introduction of "professors of practice" and apprenticeship-embedded degree programs where up to 50% of credits can be earned through industry apprenticeships, with over 100 institutions already offering such programs. Universities are encouraged to adapt to changing skill demands by incorporating fields like AI and machine learning into their curricula, supported by platforms like SWAYAM Plus. Technology is expanding digital pathways through open and distance learning and online programs, with over 116 Higher Education Institutions offering ODL programs and more than 100 offering online programs, though ensuring equity depends on institutional capacity building. Ultimately, employability is recognized as a shared responsibility among universities, industry, and government, with a call for evaluation models that extend beyond placements to encompass a broader range of indicators like skills, internships, and entrepreneurship.

The WEEK-Hansa Research Best Universities Survey 2026, conducted across 15 cities, has determined the rankings for multidisciplinary, technical, and medical universities in India based on a methodology combining perceptual and factual data. Universities were required to be UGC-recognized and offer full-time postgraduate degrees in at least two disciplines with at least three graduated batches to be eligible. The perceptual score was derived from nominations and rankings by 597 academic experts, while the factual score was based on data submitted by 81 responding universities and secondary sources, evaluating parameters such as age, accreditation, infrastructure, faculty, research, and student intake. A final composite score was calculated by summing these two components, with an interpolated factual score used for universities that did not respond but confirmed their wish to be ranked.

Hari Menon, co-founder of BigBasket, explains that the company's success in becoming a leading Indian online grocery store stems from addressing core consumer frustrations: inconsistent product availability (fill rate), delayed deliveries, and unreliable stock. He highlights the critical importance of technology investment in routing, fleet management, and predictive analytics to build customer trust, particularly emphasizing the difficulty in establishing credibility for fresh produce by working directly with farmers and developing in-house solutions for demand forecasting and supply chain reliability. Menon also credits his education at BITS Pilani for fostering a sense of freedom and responsibility, which, coupled with his passion for music, instilled valuable qualities of dedication and perseverance applicable to his entrepreneurial endeavors, and advises aspiring builders to gain practical experience by working within challenging industries to truly understand business operations and market dynamics.

The author, a Joint Commissioner of Police, reflects on how their experiences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), particularly the teachings of sociology professor Anand Kumar on equality and social justice, and early 1990s debates, significantly shaped their ability to communicate and handle opposing views, which proved invaluable in their IPS service. Student activism at JNU further honed their understanding of different perspectives, enabling them to balance enforcement with public sentiment and make decisions that maintained order while respecting concerns. This foundation was complemented by a military family background instilling discipline and service, while acknowledging that essential IPS qualities like real-time decision-making and emotional resilience are primarily learned on the ground, not solely through academia, a point reinforced by senior officer K.P.S. Gill's emphasis on unique solutions and poetic thinking. The author emphasizes the undervaluation of consistent hard work over immediate outcomes by students, noting how their sociology background aided UPSC preparation. Ultimately, they encourage JNU students to pursue the UPSC for nation-building and advise future officers to prepare for rapid technological advancements.
