Sophia College to make a splash with 34th edition of Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope 2019 is back with a bang

Sophia College to make a splash with 34th edition of Kaleidoscope Sophia College students during the Kaleidoscope Week ahead of the main event

One of Mumbai’s most beloved college fests, Kaleidoscope 2019 is back with a big bang in its 34th year! This year our theme is ‘In Future Tense’. In a world where machines have a voice, cars drive themselves and you can buy a one way ticket to Mars, the future becomes even more of an enigma. Our theme this year questions and even tries to depict the concept that is our future. We know that we will evolve but where will this evolution take us what will we metamorphose into? Staying true to this theme our events are given a futuristic spin.

Multiple events have been held before Kaleidoscope Week.

The annual pre-Kaleidoscope event, The Flash Mob, was hosted on the 23rd of August, 1:30pm at Infinity Mall, Malad. It being one of our most awaited event, over 500 girls showed up, proudly wearing official Kaleidoscope Merchandise. The Flash Mob began with a performance by a beat boxer which warmed up the crowd but as soon as our dance squad stepped into the clearing, the crowd let out a deafening cheer. The Sophian dance squad had spent a month rehearsing for this day and had shed their blood, sweat and tears to make this Flash Mob the most memorable one so far.

The show put up by our very own dance squad drew in inquisitive bystanders who stayed until the very end and cheered the dancers on. The performance was so mesmerising that when it ended, the audience chanted, “Once more! Once more!”. The performance was followed by the iconic Kaleidoscope cheer “Boom! Snap! Clap!” that reverberated through Infinity Mall. By holding our “In Future Tense” banners high , clicking photos and cheering on our very own dance squad, we displayed the spirit of Kaleidoscope. The Flash Mob was a perfect way to kick start the festival and it help set the tone and vigour of the upcoming events.

The Social Cause Rally is a pre- Kaleidoscope that is looked forward to by all Sophians. We often forget the contribution of the people around us. The annual Social Cause Rally, presents us with the opportunity to give back to society and vouch for voices than are seldom heard. Every year for Kaleidoscope we get to join forces with an NGO that backs our cause. This year, we were honoured to have UNICEF as our Official Goodwill Partner. UNICEF gave us a platform to raise awareness on the “Violence Against Children”. Therefore, Sophians, all clad in white and blue, assembled outside Rizvi Complex at 3:00pm on the 30th of August. Here, children from UNICEF surprised us with a wholesome performance before we began our march. Their enthusiasm motivated our protest. Throughout the march we held posters and shouted slogans that showed our abhorrence towards the violence that defenceless and innocent children routinely face. Our protest ended at Carter Road Beach with a performance by our classmates. We would like to thank UNICEF who helped us to play an infinitesimal role in spreading awareness about the violence inflicted upon children.

On August 29th Imagica and Student Village visited our college and brought with them games and fun prizes. Students, while buzzing in and out of lectures, stopped by to play quick game and to try their hand at winning prizes. Girls eagerly participated in the games as this helped us blow off some steam and became our calm before the storm that is Kaleidoscope week.

Before we knew it, it was the first day of Kaleidoscope week. The workforce was busy perfecting every last detail. We were running around campus, evidently stressed. We had been working hard for months and were pushing ourselves to in making sure that no stone remained unturned.

The elimination rounds commenced on the 9th of September. Flagship events such as ‘Electrocuted’ and ‘Mr. and Ms. K’ had their first rounds on this day. ‘Electrocuted’ was a band event wherein the bands had to pay tribute to Linkin Park by incorporating at least two of their songs into the set they play. The performances put up by bands were remarkable and left us dancing in our seats.

‘Mr. and Ms. K’ is hands down one of the most anticipated event. This was evident by the crowd gathered at the multipurpose hall. This contest is a personality contest. In the first round participants were asked to showcase their talent. They were supposed to answer questions concerning the art form that they showcased. The second round held on 11th September was a debate round where participants battled it out on stage. This will lead to the 3rd and final round, held on the 15th of September. This round will be incredibly special as it will be judged by Siddhant Chaturvedi! Thus the final round is definitely something to look forward to!

The workforce also had their very first K-Nite! At the end of the very first day,(i.e. 9th of September) the workforce was able to take a breather, sit back and enjoy the fest. This was possible thanks to Sunburn Campus and Tribe Vibes who arranged for DJ Shaan to come and perform for us. The performance was at the Sophia Bhabha Hall at 6:00pm. After a long day of hard work, the Kaleidoscope workforce rushed into the hall, ready to let loose and have fun. DJ Shaan played an incredible set that got us grooving in no time.

With the main days of Kaleidoscope right around the corner, the workforce is giving everything they have in order to make events experiences. The energy and enthusiasm at our campus is palpable, almost electrifying. In the future tense, when we look back at the blood, sweat and tears, that we have shed, we would realise that we were a cohesive unit that helped in creating something that was so much bigger than ourselves.

Our events so far have been incredibly successful and in the mean time we are looking forward to seeing you on the 14th and 15th September at Sophia college for Kaleidoscope 2019.
