Hold back varicose

Varicose veins are increasing owing to lifestyle changes. Here are some tips to overcome the problem—maintain proper weight, have a proper walking style to engage the calf muscles, avoid sitting or standing for long hours, avoid high-heeled footwear, avoid very tight clothing and follow a good diet. Of course, yogic stretch will definitely help. Here are some such techniques using a chair.

Note: This is a general advice and persons suffering from severe conditions should consult their doctors before practising these postures.

POSTURE 1

1 Stand in front of a chair

2 Flex the knees and take the right leg forward

3 Gently bend forward and hold the chair, keeping the arms straight

4 Rest the right foot inclined against the leg of the chair (more the inclination, better the stretch)

5 Straighten the right leg

6 Straighten the left leg, raise the left heel up and push the hips closer to the chair

7 Stay for 30 seconds, change side, repeat and relax

POSTURE 2

1 To enhance the stretch, repeat the procedure as above

2 Then, raise left leg and rest the feet on the chair

3 Stay for 30 seconds, change side, repeat and relax

POSTURE 3

1 Stand in front of a chair

2 Raise right leg and rest the heel on the chair with knee flexed

3 Press the heel on to the chair and tighten the back of the thigh

4 Gently lean forward and hold the chair

5 Slowly straighten the right leg, pull the knee cap and stretch the toes towards the knee

6 Push the root of the right thigh down and stretch the trunk up while holding the chair

7 Stay for 30 seconds, change side, repeat and relax
