Today, Earth and its inhabitants are suffering from the destructive effects of global warming. With the increasing global temperature on the Earth’s surface, humankind and other living things are going to face a catastrophe if not prevented with great priority. We should act swiftly to reduce the consequences of global warming.
Since global emissions act as a blanket on the earth’s atmosphere, it traps heat in the atmosphere making the planet warmer. Burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and cluttering the earth with non-biodegradable substances result in the accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide can survive in the atmosphere for centuries, which increases the heat-trapping effects over time.
The magnitude of global warming depends mainly on the global emission of greenhouse gases. Even though the temperature rise appears to be small, this gradual temperature rise creates a huge transformation in the global climate. Hotter days, rising sea levels, frequent weather changes, ocean warming, melting icebergs and glaciers, severe droughts, habitat disruption etc., are some of the consequences of global warming.
As you know, India exhibits diverse weather conditions. Because of global warming, India has also become a calamity prone region. Out of 35 states, 27 states are prone to the aftereffects of global warming. The expanding sea level, melting glaciers and increased level of atmospheric precipitation resulted in the occurrence of storms, hurricanes, droughts, and floods. Hence, we should not waste a single minute and start creating awareness on global warming to prevent potential effects in future.
Let us begin to contribute and bring in a positive change by implementing eco-friendly solutions and making revolutionary changes in our current lifestyle. REVA University has already started its revolution against this frightening issue to save the humankind from further destruction. The digital campaign of REVA University, Jagruti-towards global warming spreads the message of the prime minister to the country and world at large.
Jagruti is an innovative concept spearheaded by Dr P. Shyama Raju, Honourable Chancellor of REVA University to create awareness on various social issues. REVA has initiated Jagruti towards global warming campaign to create a sense of accountability in every individual to avoid a lifestyle that causes negative effects on the ecosystem.
The digital campaign against global warming was launched on July 27, 2019, to influence the youth as well as the society to protect the environment. The objective of this campaign is to inculcate awareness among the youth to save our mother nature from the frightening consequences of global warming.
REVA has given the responsibility of this campaign to the students so that the future generation will come to know the necessity of preserving nature for the well-being of humanity. This campaign is a strong message to all educational institutions and the youth of today that we need to save our nature, our mother earth and this world from global warming. Since youth can work aggressively on this concept, REVA wants Jagruti to be led by the youth of REVA.
As the first step of Jagruti 2019-20, the campaign started digitally and will continue to sustain the same with priority being on the fact that no usage of paper will be done and strongly send a message to the society that we practice and preach sensitivity towards nature and greenery. The campaign was initiated and started by students with:
1. Posts on Global Warming on all digital media.
2. Statistics on where the Earth is moving and how aware we should be about this.
3. Precaution and remedy towards Global Warming and with focus on initiatives taken up by REVA.
4. Blogs and posts towards student sensitivity.
5. REVA steps towards creating a sensitivity towards nature in the campus.
With more than 15,000 students in the REVA campus, each student has taken the pledge to take this campaign way forward. Along with the students, teaching and non-teaching staff also took it as a social responsibility and contributing to the cause. REVA has executed Jagruti as a digital campaign, which is a strategical move from the University because today’s generation lives in a technological world.
REVA University has already taken the steps to save our planet Earth by adding digital boards to avoid paper notifications, apps for navigation in the campus, ERP communication, smart classrooms, ICT classrooms, Moodle for class notes, tab-based exams, online fee payment facilities, lecture capturing system, promotion of e-books, and so on.
REVA will sustain its efforts to create a greener world by involving the student community in this social movement. The involvement of youth in this campaign will definitely bring a tangible difference around the world and encourage the world to fight against global warming.
