Popular Bengali actor and Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul was, on Friday, arrested by CBI in connection with the ongoing chit fund scam.
Paul's arrest comes days after Mamata Banerjee raised her voice against demonetisation.
Paul had earlier been interrogated by the CBI. His house and office were also raided. But he was not arrested then.
Today, he appeared before CBI officers at CGO complex at Salt Lake. After gruelling interrogation for four hours, CBI arrested him.
An officer said: "Paul was the director of the film production unit of Rose Valley company. Huge amount of public money was invested by company chairman Gautam Kundu at his insistence." Kundu is already in judicial custody.
However, questions are being raised that if Paul was the prime accused, then why was his arrest not recorded earlier?
One of the most popular actors in Bengali commercial cinema in eighties, Paul became an MP from Krishnanagar in TMC ticket. He got re-elected in 2014.
Another MP, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, has also been called by CBI. But he is yet to make it to the CBI office.
