INTERVIEW

Conclaves are for the country

21-Sharad-Yadav Sharad Yadav

Interview/ Sharad Yadav, MP

Janata Dal (United) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Yadav organised the Sanjhi Virasat Bachao Sammelan in Delhi which brought together several senior opposition leaders. He spoke to THE WEEK about the way forward. Excerpts:

What was the idea behind this conclave?

The preamble of our Constitution talks about unity. After the partition, our founding fathers took the diversity of India into account. That is why they, through the Constitution, strived to ensure a composite culture.

What is the way forward?

We have set up a committee comprising leaders who participated in Delhi. I have been made the coordinator. We will hold conclaves in all states, bringing together leaders from different parties to present a picture of composite culture.

Against whom are you rallying people?

Earlier, people used to work together. Now, the way some issues are being created in the society in the name of religion, the composite culture is bound to suffer. The conclaves are for the country.

Efforts have been made since the presidential elections to achieve opposition unity. Do you think it is working?

The entire opposition was there [at the conclave in Delhi]. The message was clear. The attempt was to create a movement. It is an effort in that direction.
