A US SWAT team on Tuesday ended a suspected hostage situation in Amarillo, Texas, shooting the gunman after an hour-long drama in a Wal-Mart store.

The police said the suspect "is apparently dead".

"Suspect has been shot by APD SWAT and is apparently dead. Hostages inside are safe," Amarillo Police Department tweeted.

Police responded to the hostage situation following reports of shots getting fired inside the Wal-Mart store. Initial reports said the gunman held at least one person hostage. Police said there were no confirmed gunshot victims, and described the incident to local media as "workplace violence."

Reports quoting witnesses said a disgruntled employee took another employee hostage. Police were looking for a Somali man wearing khaki pants.

US investigators on Tuesday were digging into what motivated a Florida man to slaughter 49 people at a gay nightclub on Sunday. Omar Mateen, who was shot dead by police after a three-hour standoff, left behind a tangled trail of possible motives. He also called police during his rampage to voice allegiance to various militant Islamist groups.
