Eman Ahmed's condition improves in Abu Dhabi

Around two and a half months after Eman Ahmed, who previously weighed 500 kilos, was transferred to Burjeel hospital in Abu Dhabi from Saifee hospital in Mumbai, doctors at the hospital say there has been significant improvements in her physical and mental health after she was diagnosed with severe depression.

According to a statement released by Dr Yassin El-Shahat, chief medical officer of the Abu Dhabi hospital, Eman's psychiatric status is being evaluated on a daily basis by their consultant psychiatrist, and also that her mood has improved significantly. Eman and her sister, Shaimaa, had left Mumbai on an extremely bitter note after a spat broke out between her treating doctor, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala and Shaimaa, when the Mumbai based bariatric surgeon announced Eman would be sent back to Egypt for further physiotherapy sessions.

Shaimaa had posted a video on social media where she claimed Lakdawala had lied about Eman's drastic weight loss and that her sister's condition was far from stable. At that time, Eman was still being fed through a tube and was unable to sit up.

Burjeel hospital soon agreed to treat her pro bono. The hospital's statement further says that she is now able to move her hands and legs and is easily able to eat and drink, other than taking medicines orally. Another major milestone for Eman is that she is now able to speak a few sentences and communicate with others. The 36-year-old had suffered a stroke three years ago which left the right side of her body disabled and also severely affected her ability to speak.

After being brought to Burjeel hospital, the doctors also observed that Eman was suffering from deep infected bed sores and following treatment, there has been a 95 per cent improvement. Other than this, following her journey to Abu Dhabi, the doctors noted she was also severely dehydrated and was also diagnosed with fever, urinary tract infection and acute kidney failure.

Now, the second stage of Eman's treatment will include surgical interventions, such as excess fat suction, which will make it possible for her to sit on an electronic wheelchair instead of constantly being bedridden. Since the age of 11, Eman has been unable to leave her bed and had become a prisoner in her own room due to multiple and severe health conditions.

In the third stage of her treatment, the doctors plan on conducting a surgery on her aortic valve, as they found that she suffers from aortic stenosis. In this condition, there is narrowing of one of the valves of the heart. Other than this, she will also need surgeries to improve the joints of her knees and hips. Her entire treatment could last for another 12 months, according to Dr El-Shahat.
