Clinton clinches an early lead in presidential election

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is leading Republican rival Donald Trump in the US Presidential election, CNN projections showed.

Clinton had a vote lead of 68 points to Trump's 66. They need a total of 270 points to win the White House.

Clinton was projected to win in Vermont, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Delaware and the District of Columbia, CNN said.

Trump was set to win in Oklahoma, Tennessee and Mississippi.

The battleground or swing states—where the two major political parties have similar levels of support among voters—that will be the deciding factor are North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

South Carolina, Florida, New Hampshire and Georgia remained too close to call, CNN added.
