Top five Olympic gaffes so far

Rio Olympics Diving Women The water of the diving pool at right appears a murky green, in stark contrast to the pool's previous day's color and also that of the clear blue water in the second pool for water polo at the venue as divers train in the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday | AP

Five days into the world's biggest sporting spectacle, here are the top five hilarious and embarrassing moments of the 2016 Summer Games, which are underway in Rio de Janeiro.

China flag fiasco

The Rio 2016 organisers have apologised to China for using incorrect Chinese flags during official ceremonies. Chinese flags used during the opening ceremony and two medal ceremonies were wrong, apparently. Only experts could spot the wrong angling of the four small stars bordering the big star.

A newsroom wag quipped: “It happened because the organisers bought cheap flags from, ahem… China.”

Pool green

What turned the Olympic diving pool green? Nobody seems to know. It is the absence of a disinfectant, said experts. It is safe, said the organisers. Is it algae? asked the divers. It seems so.

The change was noticed during the women's 10m synchronised diving final. But, the adjacent water polo pool was a perfect light blue. So, what happened to the diving pool alone?

Rio spokesman Marlo Andrada said: “This (algae proliferation) was because of heat and a lack of wind,” he said. “We did all the chemical tests. The pool will be blue tomorrow. If it were green and yellow, we would know it was a patriotic thing.” Was the last line a joke, sir?

Update: On Wednesday the water polo pool also turned green.

Sofa snafu

Cybersphere cracked up when Paul Kelso of Sky Sports tweeted this: “Hearing an Olympic kayaker may have capsized after hitting a submerged sofa. Story of day & possibly the week if true.”

Guanabara Bay has been known to have floating furniture. Local Olympic officials later issued a note denying the presence of submerged furniture in the bay.

But, meanwhile, the sofa has got its own Twitter handle and hashtag: @riokayaksofa and #kayaksofa.

Wrong anthem

The Nigerians, too, got an apology after the organising committee played the wrong anthem during their football match against Japan. The anthem did not affect the Dream Team much. They beat Japan 5-4, and Oghenekaro Etebo became the first Nigerian to score a hat-trick at the Olympics.

Bad form

If you thought the Indian Olympic Association was bad, mull over this. Polish swimmer Konrad Czerniak was pulled out of the 100m freestyle heats after Poland’s swimming federation failed to properly register him for the race. They messed up the forms and the man was pulled out of the pool at the last moment. Howzat?
