Former cricketer arrested for duping young cricketers

A 29-year-old former cricketer has been arrested for allegedly duping young cricketers whom he promised to send to Australia to play the game, police said on Tuesday. Saurav Bhamri was arrested from his hometown at Hapur at Uttar Pradesh. "A manhunt was launched for him last month but he evaded arrest by changing his hideouts. The Crime Branch on Monday raided his hometown and arrested him," a police officer said.

Another poor day for Indian wrestlers

It was another day of dismal performances by the Indian wrestlers as all four players -- Gyanendra, Ravindar, Harpreet and Naveen -- lost their respective matches to bow out of the World Championships here on Tuesday. However, in the 59 kilogram category, Gyanendra was the only wrestler, who went close to the medal as the grappler played the repechage rounds but lost in the second match. In the 66 kg category, Ravindar lost to Saad Ali Umar of Sweden 1-2 while Harpreet lost to Dilmukhamoduv of Kazakhstan 1-3 in 80 kg category. In another match, Naveen lost to Edward Pop 1-2 in the 130 kg category.

Lucas Digne unlikely Ramblas hero

FC Barcelona defender Lucas Digne has emerged as one of the unlikely heroes of the terrorist attacks which claimed 15 lives in Barcelona and Cambrils on Thursday. Digne, who only recently moved to Plaza Catalunya at the head of Las Ramblas, heard the noise when Younis Abouyaaqoub drove a van into crowds of people killing 13 and injuring almost a hundred at around 5 pm local time. Catalan radio station RAC 1 reported that 24-year-old Digne, who previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, wasted no time in collecting bottles of water and towels and rushing to Las Ramblas in order to help the injured, who were lying on the street.

Sports Literacy Mission launched

 In a bid to promote sports in the country, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) named 'Sports: A Way Of Life' on Tuesday launched a Sports Literacy Mission in the presence of 25 Arjuna award winners, Olympians and Dronacharya award winners from various disciplines at the Indian Habitat Centre here. This mission is intended to impart training as well as knowledge of athletics to youngsters who want to participate in various sports. Mohinder Pal Singh, Akram Shah, Rajiv Tomar, Rachna Govil, Ashok Dhyanchand, Zafar Iqbal, Suresh Mishra, Surendra Kataria, Sri Chandra, Sriram, Dinaram and Chandram were among the awardees present on the occasion.

Cricket Academy of Pathans to train 2 J&K talents

The Cricket Academy of Pathans (CAP), a coaching institute of Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and his brother Yusuf Pathan, who have collaborated with the Indian Army, has sponsored two youngsters from Jammu & Kashmir to train in their Noida-based academy. Danish Qadeer (18 years) and Shahrukh Husssein (20 years) were selected in the trials conducted by the Indian Army in Kupwara district. "Kids were selected by the Indian army for which they had conducted trials at Kupwara district of J&K. Out of 100 cricket enthusiasts, two were selected by the Indian Army for training under CAP," Irfan said.

Kimi Raikonnen extends stay at Ferrari

Kimi Raikonnen has signed a new one-year extension deal with Ferrari that will keep him with the team until the end of the 2018 season. The Finnish driver, whose current contract is due to expire at the end of this season, will now continue to stay at Ferrari for a fifth consecutive year and eighth season in total for the 2007 world champion. Confirming the news, Ferrari said, "Ferrari N.V. (NYSE/MTA: RACE) announces that Scuderia Ferrari has renewed its technical and racing agreement with Kimi Raikkonen. The Finnish driver will therefore race for the Maranello team in the 2018 Formula One World Championship."

Austrian football fan gets 18 months for Hitler salute

An Austrian football fan has been given an 18-month prison sentence for a Hitler salute during a match, falling foul of the country's tough laws against Nazi glorification. The unemployed 39-year-old from top-flight Rapid Vienna's "ultra" wing was spotted performing the banned gesture during a match in August 2016 and sentenced in Vienna yesterday. "I didn't really give it much thought. But it clearly wasn't a good idea," the skinhead told the court, saying he had had "a few beers and spritzers" before the game. Similar convictions are relatively common but usually the sentences are suspended. In this case, however, than man had a previous conviction for wishing Hitler happy birthday on Facebook in 2013.

Chennaiyin FC sign Spaniard Jaime Gavilan

Chennaiyin FC has signed Spanish attacking midfielder Jaime Gavilan Martinez for the upcoming season of the Indian Super League. The 32-year-old has joined the 2015 ISL champions on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract at South Korean club Suwon FC. Gavilan played in the second season of the ISL for Atletico de Kolkata. He made 15 starts for the Kolkata franchise, bagging three assists and helped them reach the semifinals, where they lost to eventual champions Chennaiyin FC 4-2 on aggregate. After leaving ISL, Gavilan has been playing for South Korea's Suwon FC.

10-year-old Aryaman creates golf history

Ten-year-old golfer, Aryaman Singh wrapped up the season on a high note, blazing his way through the first five events of the Indian Golf Union-West Zone, this year, thereby breaking his own zonal and national records. Singh remains undefeated at the zonal level for four years, winning every tournament he has played. His winning streak now extends to 1,266 days, which is the longest in the history of junior golf in India. He won the first event at the Kensville Golf Course, Ahmedabad, followed by another win at his home course, the Poona Club Golf Course, Pune, Oxford Golf & Country Club, Pune, the Gaekwad Baroda Golf Course, Vadodara.
