Bad start for India at Wrestling Worlds

It was a bad start for India as all four wrestlers—Yogesh Yogesh, Gurpreet Singh, Ravindar Khatri and Hardeep—lost their opening round matches in the Greco-Roman category at the World Championships in Paris on Monday. In the 71 kilogram category, Yogesh was outplayed by Takeshi Izumi 1-3 while, in the 75 kg category, Gurpreet Singh lost to Mindia Tsulukidze of Georgia 1-5 to bow out of the meet. Among the other grapplers, Ravindar, in the 85 kg category, was thrashed by Viktor Lorinca of Hungary 0-8 and Hardeep lost to Vilius Laurinaitis of Lithuania 2-5.

Hero named title sponsor of Asia Cup hockey meet

The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) on Monday announced Indian two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp Ltd as the title sponsor of the Mens Asia Cup to be held in Dhaka from October 11 to 22. This year, the premier continental tournament will feature host nation Bangladesh along with China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Oman and Pakistan, according to a release. India are the top ranked team amongst the competing teams at the sixth position in the latest FIH Hero world rankings, while South Korea, the current title holders are ranked 13th in the world. 

Gayle, Samuels in Windies ODI squad for England

West Indies batters Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels have been included in the 15-member ODI squad for the series in England. Gayle last played an ODI in March 2015, while Samuels in October 2016.  West Indies, who are currently involved in a three-Test series against England, will begin the ODI leg of the tour with the match against Ireland on September 13 in Stormont. The game will be then followed by five-match ODI series against England between September 19 and 29.

Pakistan to host World XI in September

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday confirmed that 15 players from seven different countries have agreed to visit the country as part of the World XI squad visiting to play a three-match T20 series to be held in Lahore next month. Addressing a press conference, PCB chairman Najam Sethi said that the Punjab Government has approved 'Presidential level security' for the week-long tour. The 15-man squad led by former Zimbabwe skipper Andy Flower as coach will undergo a seven day camp in Dubai before travelling to Lahore for a three-match T20 series starting from September 10.

Roma, AC Milan, Inter win

AS Roma, AC Milan and Inter Milan won, while Lazio played a goalless draw on the second day of the first-round action in the Serie A football season. Roma successfully kicked off the new Serie A season by defeating Atalanta 1-0 at the Atleti Azzurri d'Italia Stadium on Sunday. Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov, who joined the capital club from Manchester City this summer, scored the lone winning goal in the 31st minute to secure the first away victory for last season's runners-up.

Pune City sign Brazilian winger Marcelinho

Indian Super League (ISL) franchise FC Pune City on Monday secured the services of 2016 edition's golden boot winner Marcelinho. The Brazilian winger, who has plied his trade in Spain, Greece and Italy, represented Delhi Dynamos FC in the last season. In his 15 appearances, the South American scored 10 goals and made five assists. In his career spanning almost a decade, Marcelinho has represented Atletico Madrid B, Getafe B, Greek clubs like Skoda Xanthi F.C., Atromitos Athens, Kalamataamong among others.

Australia win 2017 FIBA Asia Cup

Australia was crowned the FIBA Asia Cup 2017 basketball champions following a 79-56 victory over Iran in the final, while South Korea clinched the third place with a win over New Zealand 80-71. Australia started the game as they meant to go on, jumping out to a 12-2 lead and convincingly controlling the contest the rest of the way on Sunday. Brad Newley had his best game of the tournament to lead Australia, finishing with 18 points, Daniel Kickert had 14, whilst Mitch Creek had another game in double digits with 12 points. Hamed Haddadi had 18 points to lead Iran, and was joined by Behnam Yakhchali as the only other player in double figures with 10.

Australia call off Bangladesh warm-up match

Australia have called off their only two-day warm-up match in Fatullah ahead of the two-Test series against Bangladesh because of poor conditions at the ground. Fatullah received incessant rainfall a week before the game, which has made a telling impact on the ground conditions. Coach Darren Lehmann, who was among of group of team staff who took a final look at Fatullah, confirmed the news to the reporters.
