The Kerala High Court on Thursday sought an explanation from the central government on why P.U. Chitra was excluded from the Indian squad for the World Athletics Championships.

The HC made the observation while considering Chitra's plea that she was left out of the Indian team despite being eligible to compete in the Worlds having won the 1,500m gold in the recent Asian Championships.

The court has asked the Center to list out the selection criteria on Friday.

The HC also sought to know whether the Center can control the functioning of the sports federations.

The Athletics Federation of India had informed the sports ministry on Wednesday that Chitra failed to meet the qualifying mark for the World Championships. Sprint legend P.T. Usha had also said that Chitra's timing was far below the qualifying mark and hence it was natural that she was omitted from the Indian squad. The mega event will be held in London from August 4 to 13.
