India rise to 105th spot in FIFA rankings

The Indian football team rose two spots to 105th position in the FIFA rankings released on Monday. Peru entered the top 10 spot for the first time while Spain climbed three places to enter the segment. India produced a dominating performance to thump Macau 4-1 in their fourth qualification match for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The victory ensured India a place in the Asian Cup 2019.

Nadal continues to lead ATP rankings

Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal remained in the number one spot in the men's Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world singles rankings released on Monday. Nadal, 16-time Grand Slam champion, maintained the top spot although he lost the Shanghai Rolex Masters final on Sunday against Switzerland's Roger Federer who came in second. Britain's Andy Murray occupied the third position, while Croatian Marin Cilic jumped to the fourth. German Alexander Zverev dropped to fifth.

Halep ranked first in WTA rankings

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep continued to lead the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings released on Monday. The 26-year-old Romanian star reached the number one for the first time in her career last week to put an end to the four-week reign of Spaniard GarbiƱe Muguruza, who came in second. There were no changes in this week's rankings, as Czech Karolina Pliskova held the third position, followed by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina. Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova, who defeated Belarusian teenager Aryna Sabalenka 7-5, 7-6 (8) on Sunday, has moved from 86 to 57.

Selena clinches triple gold at Egypt Junior and Cadet TT

India's young paddler Selena Selvakumar completed a golden sweep in the Egypt Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Open, adding the junior girls' singles and doubles titles at Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt late on Sunday evening. The 17-year-old Chennai lass had claimed the Girls' Team gold earlier on Friday to make it three out of three; even more fantastically as she remained unbeaten all through this elite 2017 ITTF World Junior Circuit event.

KL Rahul, Karn Sharma added to Board President's XI squad

Batsman KL Rahul and leg-spinner Karn Sharma have been added to the Board President's XI squad that will take on New Zealand in the warm-up games at the Cricket Club of India (CCI), Mumbai. Karn has been called as a replacement for injured Rajasthan youngster Rahul Chahar.

Messi to become father for third time

Argentinean football star Lionel Messi is set to be a father for the third time, his wife Antonela Roccuzzo confirmed. Roccuzzo posted a family photo on Instagram of Messi and their two sons, Thiago and Mateo, on Sunday touching her belly with the legend "Family of 5". The announcement was made on the same day as Argentina celebrates Mother's Day. Messi, 30, married his childhood sweetheart Roccuzzo in July in their home town, Rosario, 300km north of Buenos Aires.

Veteran Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda dies

Veteran Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda passed away following a mid-game collision with team-mate Ramon Rodrigues. The 38-year-old, regular for his club Persela Lamongan collapsed just before half-time after his collision with Brazilian midfielder Rodrigues on Sunday in the Liga 1 fixture against Semen Padang. "All of the players finished the game and went to the hospital, where it was announced that Choirul Huda had died," Persela coach Aji Santoso said.

Netherlands, PNG qualify for ICC WC Qualifier

With one round to go in the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC), Netherlands and PNG have booked their ticket to the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier (CWCQ) 2018, after Hong Kong defeated Nepal in the final series of round six matches. Hong Kong's victory over Nepal in its first match and the abandonment due to rain in the second means no team can close the gap on Netherlands and PNG, who become the first two teams from the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) to confirm their places in the CWCQ.
