Nadal continues in ATP top spot

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal remained in the number one spot in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles rankings, released on Monday. Nadal, 16-time Grand Slam champion, led the standings ahead of Switzerland's Roger Federer, while Britain's Andy Murray came in third. There were no major changes in this week's rankings, but Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov jumped to the eighth position, while Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland dropped to the ninth.

Rio-Olympic silver-medallist P.V. Sindhu on Monday expressed her pleasure after being nominated by the Sports Ministry for the prestigious Padma Bhushan, the nation's third highest civilian award. "Of course, I am very happy. I would like to thank Government and also Sports Ministry for recommending my name," Sindhu said. Sindhu recently took a sweet avenge of her World Championship final defeat to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan by beating her in the summit showdown of the Korea Open. She became the first Indian to win the Korea Super Series title.

Army team dominates 14th MTB National Championship

An army team showcased an impressive performance as they picked up two gold and bronze medals each in the 14th MTB National Championship, which was held from September 22 to September 24 in Pune. A total of 20 members of the Army MTB team participated in the championship. Rifleman Ramesh Ale of 1/5 Gorkha Rifles won the Gold Medal, and Rifleman Mukesh Kumar of 12 Rajputana Rifles bagged the Bronze.

Slovenia Open TT: Manav Thakkar-Manush Shah clinch gold

Indian pair of Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah has bagged the gold medal in the junior doubles event of Slovenia Open Junior and Cadet Open Table Tennis championship at Otocec on Sunday. Manav and Manush defeated the top-seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Feng I-Hsin and Tai Ming-Wei 11-7, 11-6, 17-15 in the summit showdown to win the event.

Shane Warne cleared of adult movie star's assault claim

Australian spin legend Shane Warne has been cleared over allegations that he had recently punched an adult movie actress in the face at a Mayfair nightclub. The 48-year-old was accused of punching 30-year-old glamour model Valerie Fox at the upmarket Loulou's nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning. However, the former spin bowler now revealed that he was initially questioned but subsequently released without charge. He further informed that no further action would be taken in the matter.

FIFA officials to reach Kolkata on Thursday

A host of officials of the world football's governing body FIFA will be landing in Kolkata on Thursday for the Under-17 World Cup which gets underway in the country from October 6. Kolkata's refurbished Salt Lake Stadium will host 10 matches alongwith the final on October 28. The first match that will be played here is a Group F tie between England and Chile on October 8. The city will be celebrating the Durga Puja festival during the time of their visit.

Coles appointed Pak women's team coach

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed Mark Coles as head coach of the Pakistan women's team for the upcoming series against New Zealand in the UAE. Coles, a New Zealander, was roped in as part of an ongoing revamp in the women's circuit. Led by Sana Mir, Pakistan eves lost all seven matches at the ICC women's World Cup earlier this year and finished last on the points table. "We have tried so many Pakistani coaches till date without better results," PCB chairman Najam Sethi said.

New Zealand drop Neesham, Broom for India ODIs

All-rounder Jimmy Neesham and batsman Neil Broom were on Monday dropped from the New Zealand One-day International (ODI) squad to tour India next month. Kiwi coach Mike Hesson named a core group of nine players for the tour, with a further six to be selected from the New Zealand A side currently in India. "The nine we've picked have made up the core of our ODI team for a while and all of them have experience playing in India," Hesson said in a statement.
