Hockey India announces men's team for Asia Cup

Hockey India on Saturday announced the 18-member Indian men's hockey team for the Asia Cup which takes place from October 11th- 22nd in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The team will be captained by Manpreet Singh while S.V Sunil will shoulder the duties of vice-captain. After giving some top junior players some good exposure in the recent Europe Tour, Hockey India named a squad with a balance of youth and experience. Goalkeepers Akash Chikte and Suraj Karkera retain their spot in the squad whereas defenders Harmanpreet Singh and Surender Kumar make a return after being rested for the Europe Tour.

Paulinho saves Barcelona against plucky Getafe

Barcelona snatched a late 2-1 win at Getafe with Paulinhos strike sending them seven points clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid at the top of La Liga on Saturday. The Brazilian midfielders signing was widely criticised by supporters but he drove into the area and fired home to preserve Barcelonas 100 percent record in the league.Gaku Shibasaki scored a magnificent volley to put Getafe ahead in the 39th minute but another substitute, Denis Suarez, equalised for Barcelona in the 62nd. In aother matches Eibar beat Leganes 1-0 while Levante drew with Valencia 1-1.

JP Duminy announces retirement from Tests

South Africa batsman JP Duminy has announced his retirement from Test cricket and first class cricket with immediate effect. Duminy, who was dropped from the team after the Lord's Test in July - the first of a four-match series, has decided to concentrate on limited-overs formats in future. He will continue to play ODI and T20 cricket for the Cape Cobras and Proteas.

Canada's Shapovalov beats BhambriĀ 

18-year-old Denis Shapovalov defeated Yuki Bhambri, India's No. 2 and world no. 157, 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-7(8), 4-6, 6-1 as Canada leveled the Davis Cup World Group Play-off tie 1-1 on Friday. Winning the first set 7-6 (2) in a tiebreaker, the Canadian teenager then bettered the performance and won the next set 6-4, but fell 7-6 (6) in the third and then 6-4 in the fourth. Shapovalov, however, bounced back in a big in the final set and secured the win in what was a marathon clash that lasted nearly four hours.

Jadeja to replace injured Axar Patel for first 3 ODIs

Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was on Saturday drafted into the Indian team replacing injured Axar Patel for the first three One-day Internationals (ODI) against Australia, starting here on Sunday. According to a BCCI statement, left-arm spinner Axar sprained his left ankle during a practice session on the eve of the first ODI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Earlier, Jadeja along with his spin twin Ravichandran Ashwin was given an extended rest following the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka last month.

ICC congratulates Pakistan

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has congratulated Pakistan for the successful staging of the Pakistan versus the World XI series for the Independence Cup at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. In their video messages, ICC Director Giles Clarke and ICC Chief Executive David Richardson thanked the people of Pakistan for embracing the World XI players and said the series has demonstrated Pakistan's passion and love for cricket, as well as its ability to provide an environment in which international cricket stars can show their talent.

Akshay Kumar inaugurates 4th Great Indian Football Action

The fourth season of SARE Homes Hindustan Times Great Indian Football Action (HT GIFA), India's biggest neighbourhood football tournament for kids, started on Saturday in the presence of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar at the Thyagaraj Stadium. The event was attended by the over 5000 players from participating teams along with their family and friends. Great Indian Football Action (GIFA), the annual inter-locality football tournament, was first organised in 2014.

Maradona's 'Match for Unity' postponed to October 5

Argentine football legend Diego Maradona's "Match for Unity", featuring former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, has been postponed from October 2 to October 5, organisers of the event said in a statement. Maradona will now arrive at the city on October 2. The match will be played in Barasat, West Bengal at the Aditya Sports Academy.
