India take on South Korea in Asia Cup

India will look to continue their winning run as they face defending champions South Korea in their first match of the second round in the Asia Cup hockey championship in Dhaka on Wednesday. After three successive wins in the pool stage, Sjoerd Marijne's wards are prepared to begin their four-game round-robin stage (Super 4s) comprising four teams. Malaysia and Pakistan are the other teams in the second round. South Korea are fighting a battle of their own with huge pressure on them for qualifying for the 2018 FIH World Cup.

Ranji Trophy: Wins for Gujarat, Bengal, Karnataka, Delhi

Gujarat, Bengal, Karnataka and Delhi clinched victories against their respective opponents on the fourth and final day of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament on Tuesday. Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal (30) and Bhargav Merai (21) played important knocks to help the defending champions post 108/6 against Kerala in Group B and clinch victory by four wickets at the GS Patel Stadium in Nadiad. In Group D, Bengal rode on pacer Mohammed Shami's (6/61) brilliant bowling to dismiss Chhattisgarh in 259 runs, winning the match by an innings and 160 runs at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.  In Group A, Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar returned figures of 4/31 to bowl out Assam in 203 runs, clinching victory by an innings and 121 runs at the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadiyar Ground in Mysore.  For Delhi spinner Vikas Mishra (4/37) starred with the ball to restrict the Railways to 206 runs, to help his side to win by an innings and 105 runs in the Group A match at the Karnail Singh Stadium here.  The other Group A match between Hyderabad and Uttar Pradesh was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

English Premier League (EPL) club Newcastle United F.C. has been put up for sale, the owner St. James Holdings Limited confirmed. "As one of the Premier League's oldest and best supported football clubs—and for the benefit of its many fans and supporters in the UK and across the world -- Newcastle United requires a clear direction and a path to a bright and successful future," Newcastle United said in a statement.

Kumble fans slam BCCI over birthday tweet

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday was criticised by the fans of former captain and coach Anil Kumble after the board acknowledged him as just a "bowler" while wishing him on his birthday and ignoring the fact that he was captain and coach as well. The incessant pouring of flaks on the twitter forced the board to delete the tweet. Regarded as one of the best spinners India has ever produced, Kumble appeared in 132 Tests and 271 ODIs for India before bidding adieu to the game in 2008.

Seeded second, Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer returned to the Shanghai Rolex Masters after two years and concluded the season's penultimate ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament with his 94th career crown after a fifth consecutive victory over old foe Rafael Nadal in the final. The 19-time Grand Slam champion chatted in an exclusive interview with Xinhua after Sunday's match, saying he has no plans to retire in the near future, but for him family is the first at the moment.

Bayern highly motivated for Celtic test

Bayern Munich will be seeking to build on their demolition of Freiburg when they host Celtic in the Champions League, coach Jupp Heynckes said on Tuesday. Heynckes, in his fourth stint at the club, replaced sacked Carlo Ancelotti and made an instant impact in his first match in charge as Bayern crushed Freiburg 5-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The 72-year-old, who led Bayern to the 2013 Champions League crown in a treble-winning season, wants an equally explosive European performance against the Scottish champions on Wednesday.

Uncapped Frylinck, Mulder named in Proteas T20I squad

The uncapped duo of Robbie Frylinck and Wiaan Mulder has been named in the 14-member South African T20I squad for the two-match series against Bangladesh, beginning October 26 in Bloemfontein. Lions' allrounder Mulder has been included in the squad as a replacement for Wayne Parnell, who has been ruled out of the remaining ODIs against Bangladesh and the T20I series with a groin injury. Meanwhile, Dolphins all-rounder Frylinck has been named in the squad as South Africa opt for a new-look T20I group against Bangladesh.

Chelsea FC conducts football clinics at Dharavi

London football giants Chelsea FC's foundation on Tuesday conducted a coaching clinic in the slum area of Dharavi in Mumbai. As part of their trophy tour, the Chelsea Foundation organised a coach education session for local coaches and a coaching clinic for the children in Dharavi. The session was conducted by a group of Chelsea Foundation coaches in concurrence with the local NGO RealityGives.

FC Goa lose to Real Murcia in pre-season friendly

Indian Super League (ISL) franchise FC Goa suffered a 1-2 defeat against Spanish football club Real Murcia's first team in the second pre-season match La Manga. FC Goa took the lead through a super free kick from Manuel Lanzarote on Monday. Later, two goals either side of half-time were enough for the Segunda Division B side to come away with a win. The ISL franchise started the game brightly and attacked with purpose early on. Their persistence was rewarded with a goal not long after kick off. Midfielder Manuel Lanzarote stepped up and curled a beautiful free-kick in to give the Goan side the lead.
