Mary Kom ready for Asian Boxing Championship

Indian star boxer and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom on Friday said that she is working really hard for the upcoming South Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Vietnam and is all set for the challenge ahead. Mary was back in her preferred 48kg category as she overcame the challenge from younger competitors to make it to the Indian team for the marquee continental event, which is to be held from November 2 to November 11 in the Ho Chi Minh City.

First female referee to officiate at FIFA U-17 WC

Switzerland's Esther Staubli is all set to create history as she will become the first female referee to officiate a match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Staubli has been appointed as the referee for the encounter between Japan and New Caledonia to be played on October 14 at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium in Kolkata. The 37-year-old Swiss had supervised at the UEFA women's Euro 2017 barely two months ago.

FC Goa go down to FC Cartagena in first pre-season friendly

FC Goa slumped to a 1-4 defeat at the hands of FC Cartagena in their first pre-season friendly at the La Manga Club in Murcia, Spain on Friday. FC Cartagena player Kuki Zalazar got onto the scoresheet in the first minute and the lead was doubled 12 minutes later. Adrian Colunga got the Gaurs back in contention with a good team goal in the 18th minute, but the team was unable to pull another goal back as Cartagena added another couple of goals before half-time. The Gaurs put on an improved performance in the second half but were unable to get onto the score sheet.

Rajyavardhan Rathore 'disheartened' after looking at Jaipur stadium

Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Friday paid a surprise visit to the Jaipur's Vidyadhar Nagar Stadium in order to inspect the facilities provided to the players. Following the inspection, Rathore asserted that he was "disheartened" after looking at the arrangements and mismanagement in Jaipur. The 2004 Athens Olympic silver-medallist observed that proper cleanliness was also not maintained here.

There is still no decision over F1 future: Alonso

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he has still not taken any decision on his Formula One future and is keeping "other categories" as option. Having secured a switch to Renault from Honda as their engine suppliers, the Spaniard is expected to stay at the newly-powered British team next year. But Alonso, whose contract expired in September this year, insisted that he was not sure about extending his contract and that he was thinking about all options.

Aguero's return from injury may light up Manchester City

Argentinian star footballer Sergio Aguero's possible return in Manchester City after the fatal injury could be the much-needed push for the club to retain the top spot on the points table of the Premier League after the last game victory against Stokes City on Saturday. The striker is one goal away to break the all-time club record. Aguero suffered a major rib fracture after his taxi hit a lamp post in Amsterdam on September 28.

Golfer Lahiri drops to tied 23rd at CIMB Classic

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri carded a one-over 73 in the second round to drop to the tied 23rd position at the $7 million CIMB Classic on Friday. Lahiri, who was tied eighth after an opening round of five-under 67, now has a total of four-under 140. The 30-year-old scored three birdies against four bogeys which gave him a 73 at the TPC Kuala Lumpur course.

National Cycling Championship to be held in November

The National Cycling Championship will be held on November 5, it was announced on Friday. The competition will see a participation of 150 cyclists. The Championship will give amateur riders from numerous cycling clubs in Delhi-NCR a shot at the Rs four lakh prize money. The riders will be divided into two categories on the basis of their cycles -- mountain, hybrid and road. They will compete in a 30-kilometre race format. 

Atletico President appeals for calm ahead of Barcelona game

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has made an appeal for calm ahead of his side's football game at home to FC Barcelona on Saturday night. The atmosphere around the game has been affected by the ongoing crisis over the Catalan region of Spain and with Barcelona the most representative club of the independence seeking region, feelings are likely to run high in the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium.
