Day 12 results: England, Spain, Iran, Mali ease into quarters

England 5 Japan 3 (penalty shootouts)

England beat Japan 5-3 in penalty shootouts to advance to the quarter-final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Tuesday. For England, Rhian Brewster, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Phil Foden, goalkeeper Curtis Anderson and Nya Kirby were on target. Japanese Hinata Kida's effort from the spot was saved by Anderson, with Yukinari Sugawara, Taisei Miyashiro and Soichiro Kozuki converting their penalties. England will now take on the United States in Goa on October 21.

Spain 2 France 1

A late penalty by Abel Ruiz saw Spain edge past France 2-1 to enter the quarter-finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday. Lenny Pinto put France in the lead in the 34th minute but soon Juan Miranda of Spain scored an equaliser in the 44th minute. In the 90th minute, Ruiz converted a penalty to seal the deal for European champions Spain. Spain will now take on Iran, who defeated Mexico 2-1 in the other pre-quarterfinal match.

Iran 2 Mexico 1

Two early goals helped Iran beat Mexico 2-1 in a Round-of-16 match of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda in Goa on Tuesday. Mohammad Sharifi (seventh minute) and Allahyar Sayyad (11th minute) goals put Iran in command. For Mexico, the lone goal went to R. De La Rosa, who found the back of the net in the 37th minute. After the win, Iran will meet European champions Spain in the quarter-finals.

Mali 5 Iraq 1

Lassana N’Diaye scored twice as Mali cruised to a 5-1 victory over Iraq in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda in Goa on Tuesday. With the win, the Chile 2015 runners-up will meet African opposition in the form of either Ghana or Niger in the quarter-finals in Guwahati on Saturday. At the 25th minute, Hadji Drame scored the 2,000th goal in tournament history.
