Indian ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar is planning to return the BMW car she received from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar for her impressive performance at Rio Olympics in August, if reports are anything to go by.

Dipa, who finished fourth in the vault category, received the high priced vehicle along with shuttler P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik. Even though Sachin handed over the keys of the cars, they were actually sponsored by V. Chamundeshwarnath, a businessman and president of the Hyderabad Badminton Association.

However, reports say that Dipa has decided to return the expensive car to Chamundeshwarnath owing to the maintenance costs and the narrow roads in her home state of Tripura. Her coach B.S. Nandi said that it was a collective decision taken by Dipa's family and him.

“There are two main reasons behind it. First, there is no BMW service centre in Agartala and secondly, the roads are not suitable to drive a posh car such as this,” Nandi was quoted as saying by a national daily.

Nandi said they had already spoken to the Hyderabad Badminton Association regarding this. “It was also suggested to them that if possible, they transfer the amount equivalent to the value of the car to Dipa’s bank account. And if not, we will be happy with whatever amount they decide,” he said, according to the daily.

Dipa had scripted history after becoming the first Indian female gymnast to compete in the Olympics. She is also one of the only five women who have successfully landed the Produnova, the most difficult vault. Dipa will next participate in the Challengers Cup in Germany.
